fibroids since when?

I'm a 41 years of age and this year I was diagnose with uterine fibroids I underwent a major abdominal surgery, I have always kept my yearly OBGYN appointments as well as regular check ups for any abnormality with my menstrual cycle, I started to have irregular periods, but pay little attention to them since I figure to be approaching the menopause age, when I went to see my doctor he prescribe hormones, which I didn't take because that same day I started a regular period I saw my doctor again in 6 months he gave me the news, x rays and MRI came inconclusive he said he had to operate because he didn't know what he was going to find, well what he got out of me, has no name,if those are fibroids I don't know how they grow so fast, they look like a bunch of grapefruits attached together I don't know how heavy they were, but I lost 13 pounds the dimentions were 19x14x7 I'm 5'4" 130lb, to this day I wonder if those fibroids were there undetected for the longest time or if they grew within 6 months or maybe a year, if so, what can a woman do to prevent this from happening? I was not prepared for this all those times that I missed my period my husband and I were hopping to be pregnant and at least have one more baby before I couldn't have any more, well that idea is out of the question now.
