re: Fibroids in Calgary
Hi, I'm writing from Edinburgh, Scotland, and hopefully sharing my experience can help you.
I'm 32 and like you was diagnosed with a LARGE! uterine fibroid, in July, causing pressure pain on my bladder, bad periods and general abdominal extension. After an MRI scan, my options became a bit clearer. My surgeon informed me last week that in the case of my fibroid, surgery will need to take place as it will continue to grow, and cause problems. However, depending on the fibroid location, vascularity and shape, various surgical methods are available that can preserve your uterus. A hysterectomy is very rarely carried out on women of our age, usually only in an emergency during surgery. I will be commencing a two month course of zoladex injections,a hormone blocker, to reduce blood supply to the fibroid and to minimise bleeding during surgery. I've been told I can't drive for 7-8 weeks after surgery and should take 2-3 months to recover, but I don't imagine I will be bed-resting for that long! We have age on our side! and I to have dogs who need their daily walks in the hills! I think it's a good idea to go to friends or relatives initially, giving you time to recover. I wish you luck, and please be reassured that large fibroids are very common and you should be offered an MRI scan to look at the options available to you.I have waited nearly 5 months to finally get a treatment plan and can sympathise with your wait.
