Weigh your options

I've always had difficult periods, but 5 years ago they became very heavy and I was severely anemic. After an ultrasound, I was diagnosed with fibroids. At that time I wanted to maintain the possibility of childbearing, so my doctor laid out my options. I considered UFE, but decided to try progesterone. I took it for 5 months and saw results that lasted for over 3 years. Last year, however, the hemmorhaging returned. I went to a gynocologist who specializes in laparascopic hysterectomies. I told him that I was considering the hysterectomy or UFE. After another set of ultrasounds he called to discuss the results and immediately began plans to schedule a hysterectomy. I'm 47 and am fairly certain there are no babies in my future, but I just don't care for the cavalier treatment of the American uterus. In Europe they use many different procedures to help women hold on to their organs. So, I told the doctor that I'd like to try UFE and he almost hungup on me. He turned me over to his nurse, who set up an appointment with Dr. Yoselevitz (the featured radiologist on this webpage). 3 weeks later, I've just completed the week of recovery from my procedure. I don't know what the results will be, but I know I'm glad I tried. Don't let doctors bully you into doing something you might regret. Make sure you know about your options (I've read some European studies about ablation and the rapid return of tumors) and do what makes you feel comfortable. Some knife happy gyno doesn't have to live with your decision.
