Dr. Eunice Moon: There seems to be a predilection in certain families. A patient that I saw recently claims to be the oldest female in her family with an intact uterus. Her sister, her mother and grandmother all had hysterectomies and so she is holding onto her uterus. It does seem to run in families and with certain races it is certainly more common. African American women are much more likely to have fibroids, but not all African American women with fibroids have symptoms.
